Trident: the ‘four submarines, three or none’ question

Vanguard class SSBNLike the majority of civilians, we see no point in stockpiling nuclear weapons we cannot ever use other than in an apocalyptic domesday scenario – and even then, their deployment would be supremely irrelevant.

We are constantly carrying these things around the world under the sea, developing systems and establishments to enable their existence, operation and readiness; and to transport and service the warheads.

There are far more productive thing to spend our money on. But we’ve got them – so the question now is where and how do we go from here?
