Plastic surgery for subs’ lead-brick ballast blocks

The navy is coating lead-brick ballast blocks in its submarines with plastic to prevent unacceptable levels of lead contamination such as those found on HMCS Victoria in 2006.

The federal government recently tendered the job to use a modified polyethylene to coat 2,380 of the ballast blocks in HMCS Windsor, based in Halifax.

"As a preventative measure, the lead-brick ballast blocks on board the Victoria-class submarines will be encapsulated to mitigate lead exposure during major maintenance work," Tina Crouse, a spokeswoman for the military, said Wednesday in an e-mail.
