Japan To Make Superlight Spy Plane

A local Japanese newspaper claims that the country's Defense Agency will make a miniature superlight reconnaissance aircraft, inspired from a paper plane. The small unmanned airplane will monitor enemy movements in Japanese territories and will measure only 60 centimeters in wingspan and weigh a measly 400 grams.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily reports that the agency will share development with private-sector firms at a projected cost of $8.68 million dollars.

The agency aims to have the plane out in the field within five years.

"We will try to develop the world's smallest patrol plane," an agency official said quoted by the newspaper.

Inspired by paper planes, the aircraft's body will be manufactured from polystyrene foam and will carry a built-in camera to take and transmit pictures. The plane will also come with a Global Positioning System receiver.
