Astute plans to update and build the next nuclear subs

Astute-class submarineTHE Royal Navy’s most advanced submarine is under construction in Barrow, where BAE Systems is building three Astute class vessels.

The first of these — Astute — is to launch on June 8, 2007.

Astute will be followed by Ambush and Artful at 22-month intervals, with an announcement awaited on orders for a further four.

Astute will be the largest and most powerful SSN hunter killer ever built for the Royal Navy.

It displaces 7,800 tonnes dived and carries 38 Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
