Third LCS nears debut amid manning worries


As the third of the Navy’s littoral combat ships readies to enter the fleet, the head of the surface Navy said officials are looking closely at the small crew size and workload to alleviate exhaustion.

Vice Adm. Tom Copeman, the new head of Naval Surface Forces, said the latest littoral combat ship will also turn a corner after a series of issues in the first two ships.

“We’re making some pretty good progress,” Copeman told reporters Aug. 7. “We’ve learned an awful lot on these first two ships. We’ve implemented a number of design changes in LCS 3 and follow[-on ships] that have taken the lessons learned that we’ve gotten from these first two ships.”
