Russia to Scrap 3 Mln Tons of Munitions by 2014

The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to dispose of three million tons of ammunition by the end of 2013 because its service life expired, Deputy Defense Minister, General Dmitry Bulgakov, said on Wednesday.

He said about 6 mln tons of ammunition are kept at 140 munitions depots around the country, although the Russian Armed Forces need only half of this amount.

About 1.5 mln tons will be scrapped in 2012, Bulgakov said.
