U.S. Navy freezes surface ship maintenance funds

USS Port RoyalThe Navy froze funding for surface ship maintenance across the fleet in early February, deferring some $450 million worth of work for repair shipyards on the East and West coasts, according to a shipyard advocacy group.

The reasons behind the funding freeze were unclear at press time, along with how long it’s expected to last. Two Navy spokesmen declined to give details, saying they couldn’t release any information before the end of a budgetary review.

The freeze affects ships scheduled to begin their maintenance availabilities later this spring, but work will continue on ships already in the yard.
