Brit nuclear HQ on Google Earth/Maps

Britain's nuclear defence HQ could be under threat from terrorists using Google Earth.

Close-up aerial views of the top-secret Naval base are on the computer program — available for free over the internet.

It even reveals the longitude and latitude of the facility in Faslane, Scotland — home to the UK’s Trident-armed nuclear submarine force.

And pictures clearly show two vast Vanguard Class submarines — each capable of carrying 16 nuclear missiles.

What the Sun regrettably fails to understand is that any high school trigonometry student can figure out the precise coordinates of the sub base at Faslane, simply by getting the precise coordinates of their favorite pub and their favorite restaurant in Faslane and taking a bearing from both. Apparently, the Sun editors flunked high school trig (along with high school English).

The Sun also apparently doesn't realize that Google Earth isn't posted in real time. The submarines have already moved by the time the pictures appear.

Finally, "terrorist attacks" have been taken into account at UK military base design and defense since the first bomb went off in Northern Ireland in the 60's. The primary concern is the threat of an insider giving or selling information about the site, not some cave dweller squinting at his solar-powered laptop at two-year-old images.

The Sun is, rather unusually for a newspaper, attempting to stir up a censorship campaign. Perhaps not so unusually for a newspaper: the dead tree media is getting killed by online outlets and this desperate tirade is clearly an attempt to defend their failing business model by portraying the online media as "irresponsible."
