Torpedoed - Collins Class submarine sinks US ship
The Adelaide-built Collins Class submarines have enhanced their global reputation by sinking a US Navy ship with a new hi-tech torpedo.
During the annual Rimpac exercises off Hawaii last week, the submarine HMAS Waller fired the latest version of the Mark 48 heavyweight torpedo.
The live firing, using a 295kg warhead, followed more than 60 test firings using exercise torpedoes during the past year.
The warshot torpedo was fired from within visual range and detonated a few metres under the hull of the retired U.S. ship.
