Russia: Iran’s Rockets Show U.S. Anti-Missile Shield Unnecessary

As tension mounts between the western powers and Iran due to the latter’s controversial nuclear program and missiles test-firing, Russia joined the debate and said the United States have no military justification for deploying missile defenses in Eastern Europe because Tehran's long-range missiles cannot reach that region.

The rockets test-fired by Iran over the past two days are capable of reaching and destroying targets located in countries such as Israel and other Middle Eastern countries where the U.S. has several military bases.

While Washington said that a shield is needed in Eastern Europe to protect the old continent from missiles fired from countries such as Iran, Moscow argued that these U.S. plans are a direct threat to Russia’s security.
