Two announcements this week have been enough to show that the Russian helicopter industry is now awake to its potential on the world stage.
The first was a Heads of Agreement announcement between the Russian industrial organisation Oboronprom and AgustaWestland that should see the final assembly of AW139 helicopters at a plant near Moscow in Russia.
Assembly should start in 2010 at an initial rate of 24 helicopters per annum. Although components would still be sourced from outside Russian, Giuseppe Orsi, AgustaWestland’s CEO said that this would put the company in an ideal position to "exploit the growing Russian and CSI markets".
