New Type 45 destroyers get a global advantage

The radar testing site at Portsdown HillIt's already a distinctive landmark on Portsdown Hill – but now it's got a new addition.

For several years the radar-testing site on the top of the hill has looked like a warship watching over Portsmouth Harbour.

The site is there to test the hi-tech new radar systems for the Type 45 destroyers that will soon join the Royal Navy.

And the latest piece of equipment – a huge globe – has just been delivered by crane to the top of the structure.

This is the third and final prototype of the BAe Systems-built Sampson radar and once all tests have been carried out, the system will be installed in HMS Daring, which is on the Clyde in Scotland.
