Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England’s decision to purchase six more F-35 Joint Strike Fighters than included in initial Air Force- and Navy-crafted 2008 budget plans should keep the program on pace to meet a key operational milestone, says an industry official.As part of ongoing internal Pentagon wrangling over the shape of the 2008 defense spending plan, England has given the services an extra $1.8 billion for six fighters, enough to purchase a total of 12 F-35s. The new plan — expected to be included in the budget blueprint Department of Defense officials send to Congress next month — calls for each service to buy six each in 2008.
“As long as the ramp-up continues at this pace,” prime contractor Lockheed Martin should be able to deliver enough F-35s to the Pentagon each year so the program meets its initial operational capability (IOC) milestone, one industry official said Jan. 4.
