U.S. Congress panel wants military boost

The U.S. House Armed Services Committee is calling for a greatly expanded U.S. military, with at least 30,000 more soldiers and 4,000 more Marines

"Force structure increases will be necessary to conduct ongoing operations in the (Global War on Terrorism) and respond to two nearly simultaneous major regional conflicts," states the new "Congressional Defense Review."

The committee of the U.S. House of Representatives is Republican-led until January. It is inserting itself into a fresh national debate about the size of the military, kicked off officially last week by the Army chief of staff who told a panel either the Army must get bigger or it would "break." President George W. Bush endorsed growing the military in an interview this week with the Washington Post.
