The Russian Strategic Rocket Forces successfully test-launched an RS-20V Voyevoda intercontinental ballistic missile (R-36M2 Satan under Western classification) in the Orenburg region on Thursday, the forces' spokesman Col. Alexander Vovk told Interfax-AVN.
"The training warhead of the missile hit the hypothetical target at a test range on the Kamchatka peninsula," he said.
The effort is intended to confirm the flight and technical characteristics of such missiles as part of a project to extend the service life of such missile systems to 20 years, Vovk said.
"The recent launch has once again confirmed that the design and technological solutions used in the missile system equipped with R-36M2 missiles are right. The system's readiness to fulfill combat missions once its service life is extended was confirmed as well. The missile had been in operation for 19 years before the launch," he said.
