Austrian Parliamentary Committee To Probe Eurofighter Deal


Eurofighter Typhoon - Nothing comes close

The Austrian parliament voted Oct. 30 to set up a committee to look into a 2002 two billion euro ($2.55 billion) deal by the outgoing conservative government to buy 18 Eurofighter aircraft.

The decision followed an emergency debate on the issue on the first day of a new parliamentary session following the defeat of outgoing Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel’s conservative and far-right coalition in a general election on October 1.

The call for the inquiry came from the social democrats (SPOe) who won a narrow victory in the election, the Greens and part of the extreme right FPOe party.

Schuessel has been in talks with the SPOe since mid-October over the possibility of forming a grand coalition but some of his supporters have said they would walk out of the talks if the committee of inquiry were set up.
