More Norfolk ships aid in evacuation of Lebanon

USS Iwo JimaA small armada of Norfolk-based amphibious ships was ordered Tuesday to race north in the Red Sea and reach Americans in war-torn Lebanon who are desperate to escape.

"We are moving as fast as our engineering plant will allow us to go," said Navy Capt. Sinclair Harris, commanding the five-ship, 6,000-member force heading to the area.

Sailors and Marines are en route to help evacuate thousands of the estimated 25,000 Americans caught in the fighting between Lebanon and Israel, Harris said Tuesday in a satellite telephone interview.

Crews have been told that "our mission is to help Americans get to safety and, not unlike what happened with us in Katrina, I know the sailors and Marines are looking forward to doing anything they can to help," Harris said.
