The first of four Super Lynx 300 maritime helicopters being built for the air force and the navy made its maiden flight at Yeovil in England, on Thursday.
The successful first flight was watched by representatives of Armscor and the SA Air Force, said Stephen Laufer of the manufacturing company.
The Super Lynx 300 is a specially designed and equipped maritime helicopter that will see service with the navy's new Valour-class frigates.
The air force's version of the Super Lynx 300 aircraft had a high level of South African-sourced avionics and mission equipment, making it the most advanced version of the Super Lynx 300 helicopter developed and produced so far, said Laufer.
