HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen Enters Service

HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (F310)
HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen (F310), the first Nansen-class frigate, was handed over to the Royal Norwegian Navy by Navantia (Ferrol, Spain) on April 5. The new frigate is the first of a five-ship series ordered on June 23, 2000.

The keel of the Fridtjof Nansen, was laid on April 9, 2003, and the ship was launched on June 3, 2004. The keel for the second ship, Roald Amundsen (F311), was laid down on June 3, 2004, and the vessel launched on May 25, 2005. The second Nansen-class frigate was expected to enter service this year, but that date will now probably slip to the early months of 2007. The remaining three frigates – the Otto Sverdrup (F312), the Helge Ingstad (F313), and the Thor Heyerdahl (F314) – are to enter service annually, through 2009. In 2010, the complete series of five frigates will be operational with the Royal Norwegian Navy. The whole program is valued at more than $2.4 billion.
