
Boeing of the United States and IAI ELTA of Israel have been selected to vie for the country¡¯s $2 billion project of early aircraft warning systems, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
A total of three foreign manufacturers submitted bids for the weapons procurement project, codenamed E-X, but the SVC, a U.S. aircraft maker, has dropped out of the bid as its product failed to meet the requirements of the ROK Air Force.
``The SVC, a consortium company of the U.S., Brazil and Sweden, failed to satisfy our requirements, especially of radar detection capabilities,¡¯¡¯ Col. Cha Jong-hwan at the ministry¡¯s weapons acquisition bureau told reporters.
Under its mid- and long-term weapons buildup program toward a self-reliant defense posture, the ministry plans to purchase four airborne early warning and control systems (AWACS), by 2012.
