Geraldton farewells HMAS Canberra

THE HMAS Canberra and her 218 crew left Geraldton on Monday morning following a three day goodbye visit as part of the frigate's final voyage before being decommissioned next month.
Canberra, who is now on her way to Albany, also took with her six Geraldton TS Morrow Naval Cadets and seven Albany TS Vancouver Naval Cadets.

The Cadets will have the opportunity to be involved in everyday operations on the ship and get an idea for what lies ahead if they pursue a career in the Navy.

Commanding Officer Raymond Leggatt said after 24 years of operation the ship's decommissioning was both a sad and special occasion.

"The ship's been part of many people's lives for a long period of time and to see her retire is the sad part," he said.

"It's been quite nostalgic I suppose and everything we do now is our last time we do this, the last time we do that..."
