Japan subs option driven by politics not merit warns inquiry

Soryu class SSKJapan's involvement in the Abbott government's $20 billion acquisition process for new submarines is driven by political imperative rather than merit and the current approach should be scrapped and replaced with a fairer limited tender, a parliamentary inquiry has found.

The majority finding comes in the final report in to naval shipbuilding handed down by the Senate Economics Legislation References Committee on Wednesday

The committee has taken evidence from naval shipbuilding experts across Australia for months.
