Shipbuilding review excluded Navy submarines

HMAS Waller (SSG 75)A major review into Australia’s shipbuilding industry excluded the Navy’s future submarine project on advice from the Abbott government that the new fleet would be built offshore.

The $2.5 million review into the country’s naval industry, carried out by US-based Rand corporation, has found that Australia can support about 2000 jobs in the long term, and may need to rationalise to just two major shipyards.

Lead author of the Rand report, John Birkler, said the $50 billion SEA-1000 project to provide the Navy’s next fleet of submarines was not in the terms of reference.
