Ashton Carter, the newly confirmed US secretary of defense has stated that he is looking forward to assisting the Republic of China Navy in improving its asymmetric combat capabilities under the sea according to our Chinese-language sister newspaper Want Daily.
Carter was confirmed as the secretary of defense on Feb. 14. He told the US congress that the Pentagon will push to help Taiwan to improve its underwater combat capability, as China builds up its fleet of ballistic missile submarines for a potential confrontation with the United States in the Western Pacific.
China is currently negotiating to purchase four Amur-class submarines, the export version of Russia's Lada-class air-independent propulsion submarine, which it will likely deploy in the Taiwan strait.
