Watchdog's rating of aircraft carrier programme raises fresh concerns

Queen Elizabeth class CVRenewed questions about the Ministry of Defence's troubled aircraft carrier programme have been raised by the Major Projects Authority (MPA) in its annual report

The aircraft programme is the only one of eight projects the government watchdog rated "red" in 2012 that remains in that category. The category is based on the difference between the annual budget and the estimated forecast spend.

The MoD is building one aircraft carrier, due to begin its sea trials in 2017, and is proposing a second. The contract was announced in 2007, but repeated changes about what kind of planes should use the carrier have contributed to spiralling costs, up from an estimated £5.4bn in 2012 to £6.2bn last year.

  1. The ignorance of the reporter who filed this article is only surpassed by the remarks made in the comments column.
    Anyone with the slightest interest in defence matters will realise what a complete load of garbage,this article is.
    To say that the government is only 'proposing and second carrier,and that a decision will be made next year is laughable.
    The second carrier Prince of Wales is already in build,with large parts of it completed. Indeed the bow section has been delivered to Rosyth for some months now.
    As soon as Queen Elizabeth is floated out of the dock,preparations will be made to get things ready to recieve the major blocks of POW.

    Pathetic,lazy reporting.
