With Australia's fiscal budgetary problems having contributed to a low Defence expenditure of 1.5% of GDP - this government's commitment to an indigenously built submarine fleet of 12 conventional submarines is inexplicable. That the only likely builder, the ASC (Aust Sub Corp), having been responsible for the troubled Collins class submarine and it's current ongoing problems in the construction of 3 AWD (destroyers), continued commitment to this course of action should and must be challenged
. The high cost and risk of building an orphan class of submarine - by no means suited to Australia's demography (vast distances) demands that a serious and objective assessment be made in purchasing "off the shelf" Virginia Class Nuclear Submarines - which are currently under construction, are ideally suited to Australia's needs, and represent a substantial saving on what will almost certainly be more than $36 Billion.

Why does Ozzie need submarines ? What enemies does Ozzie have ? Do you realize how isolated you are for any one to even bother to disturb you ?
