Admiral Lord West, a former head of the Royal Navy, said that cuts imposed on the service were becoming dangerous for the UK.
"We live on an island and more than 90 per cent of everything that goes to and from this country goes by sea," he wrote in an open letter to the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.
