Missile-shooting laser: Will Congress slash funding for the Navy-backed project?


Among the myriad of deals being made at the nation’s capital is whether the Navy will continue to fund a laser designed to shoot down missiles.

Under development at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, the Free Electron Laser is among the more advanced — and costly — technologies the Navy is financing.

But the Senate Armed Services Committee in June moved to eliminate funding for it and a railgun that shoots bullets powered by energy, not explosions.
