A scan of recent naval procurement by South-east Asian navies shows that submarines top their shopping lists, with Thailand and the Philippines both talking of adding submarines to their fleets.Thailand plans to buy six former German Navy Type 206 submarines. Despite domestic criticism against the plan, Bangkok believes that the US$257 million (S$309 million) purchase will be money well spent.
The Thai navy argues that the underwater warships are needed to patrol the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, and to catch up with neighbouring navies' modernisation.
