Final proud return of the Fighting Sausage: HMS Cumberland is back, now sailors fear for their jobs
She has been affectionately dubbed ‘the Fighting Sausage’ after the famous Cumberland sausage, and played a key role in rescuing 129 Britons from war-torn Libya.
But yesterday, the triumphant return of HMS Cumberland to British shores was tinged with sadness as 40 of the ship’s crew face losing their jobs.
The Type 22 frigate’s entry into HM Naval Base Devonport, Plymouth, after six months’ deployment comes just weeks before she will be decommissioned on June 23 because of cuts to the defence budget.
