The Nimrod Maritime Reconnaissance Attack 4 (MRA4) programme started when BAE Systems was to be paid a 'fixed price' of £1.6bn for 21 Nimrod MR4s by 2002.
It was to be a 90 per cent new build and the re-engined Nimrod MRA4 was a massive improvement over the MR2.
Equipped with more than 90 antennae and sensors and containing over six million lines of software code, the MRA4 was designed to scan an area the size of the UK every 10 seconds.
