HMS Albion becomes RN flagship

HMS AlbionAmphibious assault ship HMS Albion has been named as the new Royal Navy flagship replacing HMS Ark Royal, which is soon to be decommissioned.

Albion, based in Devonport, is assuming the role following October's strategic defence and security review, during which the Prime Minister announced that HMS Ark Royal was to be decommissioned some three years ahead of schedule.

HMS Ark Royal returned to Portsmouth for the last time on 3 December, just over 25 years after being commissioned into the Royal Navy. It had been due to remain in operation until 2014.

  1. This is so sad and so pathetic. The British are taking the Ark Royal, youngest of their three small carriers, out of service, as well as all of their Harrier jet fighters. Soon the Royal Navy, the navy that helped pioneer carrier warfare, will have no carrier-based jet aircraft. The number of their surface warships is being reduced to a pathetic 19, meaning that India, its former colony, will have a larger number of surface warships in commission than the Royal Navy. For an island nation like England to let the Royal Navy decline in this manner is simply shameful. I hope a war does NOT start soon where they will need a large navy (as in the Falklands). Because, if it does, they will not have one.
