Le Terrible, SSBN is the first to feature the new intercontinental missile with nuclear warheads M51, which is also being called to active duty. This missile provides a significant improvement in the scope and accuracy while providing greater flexibility of implementation. The three other SSBNs will be subsequently adjusted to accommodate the new missile between 2010 and 2018.

Both services are put in an important step in modernizing the French nuclear deterrent.
