Russia hikes Sukhoi prices

Russia has hiked the price of Sukhoi fighter jets for India by two-and-half times in just three years.

This is the sharpest increase in the price of military hardware.

It's a clear indication that the special relationship between India and Russia will not prevent Moscow from extracting its pound of flesh.

Vishal Thapar is a fool. Price of Sukhoi fighter jets for India has risen by two-and-half times in thirteen years, not three. The last tranche ordered three years ago cost $65 million a piece. The latest order is for a new variant with AESA radar and other new avionics. Subsequently older Sukois will be upgraded to the new standard too. The $100 million price of an AESA equipped top of the line jet entering service beyond 2015 is entirely appropriate and consistent with similar acquisitions worldwide. That also explains the apparent high cost of Mirage 2000 upgrade. People complaining are comparing it to 10+ year old fighter prices.
