Navy’s new frigates late, over budget
Federal "foot-dragging" was blamed by former defence minister Allan McKinnon for putting Canada’s warship replacement program "at least a year behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over budget."
A plan to refit all of the navy’s destroyers would, McKinnon said, further delay the proposed frigate construction program.
In Halifax, Vice-Admiral James Andrew Fulton took over as head of Maritime Command and said he "hoped" the government would announce "soon" the launch of a $1.9-billion frigate construction program.
This, he stated, was "vital" to a modernization program, which would "maintain this country’s first-class reputation with its allies." Read more
