Nuclear subamarine HMS Sceptre set to be recycled

Swiftsure class submarineA nuclear submarine is to be recycled into cars, washing machines and office furniture under a plan by Navy chiefs.

HMS Sceptre, which has been decommissioned, will have all its radioactive material removed and its hull broken up, with the steel being melted down and re-used.

Old subs are "defuelled" as soon as possible - meaning that uranium fuel elements are removed from the reactor and then transported for storage at Sellafield in Cumbria.
