Call for dual-purpose subs

Vanguard-classA defence expert has suggested dual-purpose submarines which fire Trident missiles could be built in the future.

The Royal Navy currently has three operational classes of submarines.

They are the 16,000-tonne ballistic missile submarines, which are large to accommodate Trident inter continental nuclear deterrent, the smaller hunter-killer classes, including the 7,400 tonne Astute class being built in Barrow now, and the Trafalgar class built here in the 1980s.
