The aircraft is being retired from service, with a replacement - the Nimrod MRA4 - due to come into service in 2012.The UK's fleet of Nimrod MR2s are based at RAF Kinloss and it has had a long history with the RAF since its development in the 1960s.
The Nimrod is based on the de Havilland Comet, the world's first ever passenger jet aircraft. It has been used by the RAF in its maritime patrol role since the 1970s.
