U.S. asks Tokyo to pay ¥1 billion for F-35 details

The United States has asked Tokyo to pay around ¥1 billion for information on the capabilities of the stealthy F-35, a leading candidate to replace Japan's aging fighter-jet fleet, sources said Saturday.

It is rare for a country to be charged such a large sum for information on potential imports of defense equipment.

The U.S. also told Japan that Washington will not provide information on the F-35's radar-evading capabilities until Tokyo makes a decision to purchase it, the sources said.

  1. We went looking for a car a couple of years ago. The Toyota dealer told us we couldn't test drive a Prius, we'd have to rent it. And they wouldn't make a straight offer - we had to start negotiations to buy for that.

    We told them to get stuffed, and bought a Subaru.

    Japan should do the same. Boeing's F-15SE Silent Eagle, and BAE's Eurofghter, wuld both be fine choices instead, without all that hassle.

    If this is the way the F-35 team approaches exports, they'll be lucky to manufacture 2,000 total, all variants.
