The RAF is to get a third wave of Eurofighter/Typhoon aircraft in spite of pressure on the defence budget. Doubt had been cast over whether the RAF needed more Typhoons but today Gordon Brown announced that the final tranche had been approved.
The decision will safeguard about 16,000 jobs in the UK aerospace industry, including 5,000 at BAE Systems, the main British partner in the four-nation project.
