Northrop Grumman Corp. on Friday will authenticate the keel of the submarine California at its Newport News shipyard, marking the first major milestone of the eighth Virginia class boat.
The California, portions of which are under construction at the shipyard, is due to be finished and delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2013.
In a 12 noon ceremony in Newport News, the California's sponsor, Donna Willard, who is the wife of Adm. Robert F. Willard, commander of the Navy's Pacific Fleet, will sketch her initials onto a steel plate, ceremoniously marking her approval of the vessel's construction.
