EU ministers to mull extending anti-piracy force to Seychelles

Flag of European UnionEU defence ministers will on Monday discuss extending their anti-piracy naval action far south of its current remit off the Somali coast and as far as the Seychelles, a European diplomat said.

The Atalanta naval operation "has been a great success," since its launch last December "but there is a question of extending it southwards and to the Seychelles," the diplomat said, recognising that this would entail European nations sending more navy ships.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, pirate attacks off lawless Somalia increased tenfold in the first three months of this year compared with the same period in 2008, jumping from six to 61.
