The global economic downturn has helped boost the ranks of sailors, the defence force said as it announced an encouraging navy recruiting result.
With five months to go in its annual recruitment period, the navy has signed up 780 sailors, or 67 per cent of its recruitment quota for the year.
But Commodore Tim Barrett, director-general of defence force recruiting, was cautious about declaring the navy's recruiting problem finally solved.

As most expected the downturn in the Aussie economy is of benefit to defence recruiting. In particular the closure or shaky prospects of mines in Western Australia, where all the submarines are based, has translated into good recruitment stats.
ReplyDeleteBut the quality of recruits and their commitment to stay after 5 years is the real (unknowable) test.
