Hunt almost over for killer-class subs

A class of Barrow-built nuclear powered submarines will all be withdrawn over the next 14 years, says the government.

The Trafalgar-class hunter killer submarines were each built in the town, and will eventually be replaced by the new and much larger Astute-class subs being built by BAE.

In answer to a parliamentary question, defence minister Quentin Davies said that on current planning assumptions, the Trafalgars would be decommissioned as follows: HMS Trafalgar and HMS Turbulent 2011, HMS Tireless in 2013, HMS Torbay in 2015, HMS Trenchant in 2017, HMS Talent in 2019, and HMS Triumph in 2022.
