Dutch defense chiefs back Joint Strike Fighter

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has advised Parliament that it would like to replace its air force fleet of F-16 fighter jets with the U.S.-built Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, the newspaper NRC Handelsblad reported last week.

The decision was a contentious one that actually had been made once before in 2006. Back then, the Dutch defense chiefs had come to the same conclusion after staging a contest between the Swedish Saab Gripen NG, an advanced version of the F-16, the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault's Rafale from France.

Political strife, however, caused the Dutch Cabinet to resign and throw the deal back to square one.
