The RAF sat on two key reports requested by lawyers at the inquest into the deaths of 14 servicemen killed when an RAF Nimrod spy plane exploded over Afghanistan two years ago.
One of the reports was a technical investigation of a similar incident that backed up the coroner’s main conclusion that the leak which led to the explosion was caused by misalignment of fuel pipes and couplings.
But within minutes of the coroner recording his verdict in May this year, Bob Ainsworth, the armed forces minister, rejected it and insisted there was no problem with the aircraft.
