Australian safety fears over subs' batteries

The navy's sole supplier of submarine batteries is being investigated over allegations it is placing sailors' lives at risk by using substandard materials.

Pacific Marine Batteries, of Osborne, is under review by the navy and the government's defence buying body, the Defence Materiel Organisation, on three fronts – a technical study, quality audit and financial audit.

Financial documents obtained by The Advertiser show the privately owned company has recorded annual profit figures of up to 40 per cent, well above the 10 per cent ceiling on taxpayer-funded contracts.
