South African Navy frigates are 'value for money'

If the South African Navy was to buy its four state-of-the-art frigates now, it would cost three times the price.

"They were real value for the money and for the missions that we want them to do," Rear Admiral Bernie Teuteberg, the South African Navy's chief director of maritime strategy, said in Durban.

He was addressing a press conference on board the frigate SAS Amatola, which was open to the public over the weekend to mark World Hydrographic Day.

The frigates cost about R1,5-billion each.
