The tradition of paying tribute to combat heroes by naming Navy ships after them has reached the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The first two destroyers named after Medal of Honor recipients from those conflicts are to be commissioned in 2010 and 2011.
The Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer, expected to be launched in 2011, will be named after Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed on June 28, 2005, Navy spokesman Lt. Clay Doss said. Murphy left his cover position to signal for help while under heavy fire in Afghanistan, according to the " Heroes in the War on Terror" website.
