The Pentagon has approved $2.2 billion to buy six Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, its second purchase of the new jets, the company said on Thursday. Lockheed said the Pentagon had also provisionally approved the purchase of six F-35s for the U.S. Marine Corps, pending the inaugural flight of a Marine variant of the aircraft and a review by senior leaders.
The Marine Corps version will be able to do short takeoffs and vertical landings.
